Toothbrushing Secrets

Maybe its no secret but its certainly a little known fact that dry brushing your teeth is an effective way of cleaning your mouth. In our practice the one area that is usually missed by patients during brushing is the lower arch inner surface of the teeth (mandibular lingual). The root surfaces frequently have deposits of plaque and tartar causing gum irritation and bleeding. My recommendation is to begin your toothbrushing reqimen by brushing the inside of the bottom teeth first with a dry toothbrush (no water and no toothpaste). Dry brushing is more effective at removing plaque and allows the person to see if the area is being cleaned, absent of foaming of the toothpaste. After you have cleaned this area apply toothpaste to the brush and continue with the rest of the mouth.

In our practice patients that dry brush have cleaner mouths and less gum disease at recall visits. Good luck and keep those teeth healthy.
