Abrasive toothpaste linked to increased sensitivity

New Sonicare Elite Toothbrush

The new Sonicare Elite electric toothbrush is out and represents an advancement in sonic cleaning. Currently the two main home systems of cleaning are oscillating/pulsating and sonic. In the oscillating category is the Braun Oral-B 3D Excel. The 3D Excel has a round brush head that oscillates at 7,600 strokes per minute in combination with pulsating action of 40,000 movements per minute. The action has a very effective scrubbing action that has shown to remove plaque on the tooth surface. In contrast the new Sonicare Elite works at 30,000to 31,000 brush strokes per minute, creating an acoustic energy which manufacturers claim creates bubbling action of the liquid slurry that penetrates in between the teeth.

I have been using the new Sonicare Elite for about two months and find it much easier to maneuver due to the smaller head size than the original Sonicare. In almost every case we have noticed our patients that use either the Sonicare or Braun brush have healthier gums at hygiene recare visits.

Our office currently has a stock of the Sonicare Elite and I am told by this summer( 2003) they will be available in retail stores.
