Smoking It is now apparent that a person that is Genotype Positive cannot smoke and expect to have their teeth for a lifetime, unless they have impeccable oral hygiene. These are the people that must be treated aggressively if early signs of periodontal disease are found. The urgency and intensity of the treatment is based both on the damage that has occurred and the risk for future problems. Based on our current knowledge of the cause of gum disease, our office has tailored our Tissue Management Program. In this way, patients receive only the necessary treatment based on individual needs. Knowing a patient's degree of risk for severe periodontal disease can be valuable in many different situations. This can be especially important for children of patients with severe periodontal disease. Good habits can be instilled with greater ease on children, including teens. So it is beneficial to start treatment for this problem at any age, both young and old.
