Poor Hygiene

Patients who have excellent homecare habits, visit a dentist regularly, and do not smoke significantly reduce their risk for developing the disease, regardless of their genetic susceptibility.

If an individual is Genotype Positive the risk factors of heavy smoking and bacterial plaque make bone loss from periodontal disease almost certain. For years dentists have attempted to understand why patients have attempted to understand why patients with similar plaque levels and oral bacteria profiles often show remarkably different levels of disease. Genetic is now understood to be the biggest influence in disease susceptibility.
