Nutrition Screening in our Office

There is a synergistic relationship between oral health and nutrition. Dental disease can have a profound effect on the ability to obtain adequate nutrition, and poor nutrition can cause a breakdown in oral health. This relationship was addressed in the United States Public Health Service’s Healthy People 2010 Objectives for the nation.

The effect diabetes has on gum health has been known for many years. Our hygienists have advised patients to be evaluated for diabetes after noticing sudden unexpected bleeding and inflammation in the gums.

Although we know that bacteria causes tooth decay, it is not fully understood why some people get more decay than others. Often in cases of rampant decay it is necessary to evaluate and modify the persons diet to prevent continued decay.

For this reason, our office is fortunate to have the registered dietitian Teresa Runkle within our facility. Teresa was previously employed as the dietitian of the Reading Hospital. I am pleased that we were able to offer her space in our office for her independent practice. Teresa has a master’s degree in nutrition education.

Recent articles in dental journals have indicated the importance of nutrition in oral health. Following a process of nutrition screening our office is pleased to be able to provide the necessary guidance to patients in need of nutritional information and guidance.
